We are in the planning stages of a trip for early November We recognize that usually the "main stops" have some appeal, but the large tourist crowds deter us from spending too much time in these locations.
We recognize Isaan it is a large area and would appreciate some insight to narrow our focus. We are considering flying from Bangkok to Khon Kaen. We would then make our way to Sangkhom and Nakhom Ratchasima as possible options. We are fit 50 plus travelers who don't need a lot of luxury and really want to experience the area. Insight would be so appreciated. Day 3 Fly to Khon Kaen Isaan. Day 10 Fly to Chiang Mai. Day 12 travel to Cambodia , Siem Reip.
We are fluid at this point in our planning. Our overall trip of three weeks will likely involve Thailand and Cambodia but for the purpose of this query I have left the Cambodia details out. Thank you so much in advance for suggestions, insight, gems. We love the hive mentality and are grateful for your time.
Do visit the ancient ruins at Pimai, this is possible to do by bus from Korat Nakhom Ratchasima. Take a peek at that map again, especially if Sangkhom, is the same I'm thinking of. Not exactly around the corner to either KK or NR. Would highly recommend self driving for Isan. Although with proposed schedule, you'll be on the road and in bed more than seeing much of anything. You have an totally unrealistic plan for a 12 day holiday. Especially the Isan part, as backtracking a bit, actually a lot.
I think hiring drivers in each place is likely to be expensive and less rewarding than driving yourself. If you meant a tour with a private tour guide who would also drive you, that might work okay. And while I only stopped overnight in Khon Kaen , a big city without any obvious attractions, I did stay several days in Khorat aka Nakhon Ratchasima.
