After all, a bed is a bed is a bed if you are vagabonding. For this, I checked Workaway for some work exchanges. I was fortunate to be able to find a host in Hualien. I wanted to visit Hualien for the longest time because of the Taroko National Park.
After moving around in Australia for a couple of months I wanted a base for myself for at least 2 weeks. For 36 USD I had access to their host list for a year. We communicated back and forth for some clarifications.
My host name was Amrita. She owns 3 properties. Property 1 is a hostel. Property 2 is for Airbnb rental. Property 3 is for long term guests. Work required is mostly cleaning or reception work only for property 1 for 5 hours, 5 days a week. I hated sweeping and mopping the floors! I needed to be meticulous and get all the hair out. In return, a bunk bed was provided for me at the hostel and sometimes some food. I can use all the facilities of the hostel including the kitchen if I wanted to cook.
After our shifts, I can do whatever I want. My host is an inspiring woman. She was cool before Steve Jobs was. You have to meet her to understand. My fellow workawayers were awesome too! In the end, it was not about the free accommodation and some food in exchange for a few hours of cleaning time. It was the unexpected friendships that I gained.
